How to press your own fresh vegetable oils

Here’s a highlight of a super cool gadget that I own and LOVE.

Earlier this morning as I was applying my home-pressed pumpkin seed facial oil (with Helichrysum, carrot seed, yarrow and blue chamomile essential oils… decadent!) I realized that you all probably don’t know about home oil presses.

This is something I posted on a while back on Uncle Dutch Farms, so I thought I’d make a quickie post here to tell you about it.

A couple years back, I got the Piteba oil expeller and I love that thing!

Most people consider vegetable oils to be healthy (amIrighthere?) but what most people don’t know is that most of the time, those oils have to be extracted using chemical solvents (canola! soybean!) and so there isn’t really anything “natural” about them.

And that doesn’t even touch the GMO issue (cough*soybean*cough).

My food philosophy is pretty much this – I realllly dislike eating anything that requires modern technology to become edible.

Home-pressed oils fit the bill.  Fresh, delicious, healthy and very possible for you to even grow your own seeds/nuts and produce the oil directly from your own homegrown!

Soybean oil?  Not so much.  I don’t care how awesome your press is, you can not mechanically press soybean oil.  Soybean oil is extracted using hexane, and then the remaining meal gets turned into animal feed and soy protein for human consumption.  Yum?  Not so much.

SO, moving along here… I ended up buying a Piteba to press my own oils and have really loved this thing.

My only pet peeve is that it’s kind of a pain to clean, so it’s not like a “I’m gonna go press an ounce of toasted sesame oil for dinner” kinda deal.  But with a little planning ahead, it’s yielded some delicious, fresh and healthy oils for our table.

I’ve had luck pressing sesame, sunflower, and pumpkin seeds.  I’m also going to try coconut oil, although the pain that it is to remove the coconut meat from the shell is probably enough that I wouldn’t want to do it consistently.

You can also toast the seeds beforehand for extra flavor, though the shelf life is diminished.

This would also be awesome for anyone who takes flax seed oil for omega 3s – nice and fresh (not to mention cheap!).

So, if you’ve ever wanted to press your own veggie oils, you can read my full review with pictures here.

Also – for all you preppers out there, this would be a very good thing to have on hand.  Also for anyone who is eating a plant-based diet who wants a good source of healthy oils.

P.S. if you decide you MUST HAVE one of these bad boys, I’d love it if you used the link in the review.  It’s my affiliate link, so they will give me a lil sales commission which will go towards the “Camera-less in Blog-Land fund.”

Jack Bauer Drinks KefirHave you ever heard of this weird drink called kefir?

And no, it has nothing to do with Jack Bauer.

Though I bet he drinks it, because it’s awesome and he’s awesome.

No, actually kefir is something many haven’t heard of… but believe it or not, you don’t have to join any secret societies to get your hands on the stuff.

Oh yeah… you probably want to know…

What Kefir is and Why You Should be Drinking it

In a nutshell -

  • It’s better than yogurt or soda (depending on the type of kefir)
  • It takes a whopping 5 seconds to make
  • Kefir is ridiculously healthy for you
  • It tastes good
  • It’s multipurpose

Oh and one more thing – while yogurt helps you digest while it is in your system, apparently it doesn’t actually colonize your gut, but kefir colonizes your gut so drinking it is a cumulative effect of bacterial awesomeness. A Food Blogger Without a Camera…

Farewell, my devoted old $150 Kodak digital camera.

You served me well, through countless times of being dropped, smacked, and abused in some fashion.

Even after your buttons stuck, the lens cover wouldn’t fully close or open without help, and the battery casing needed to be duct-taped, you still took wonderful photos for me time and time again.

When I came into the kitchen on that fateful morning, my breath caught in my throat as I saw you, laying still and silent in a pool of beef broth.  It was completely my fault -*I* had forgotten to put the broth away, and it was naturally discovered by those evil creatures that we call “cats.”

I am terribly sorry, but oh-so-grateful for your many years of faithful service.  You will be missed.

Love,

Bethany (The Food Blogger Without a Camera)

Dear Readers…

So… now I have no camera and no money in the budget to replace my old camera.

I do have a little backlog of things I’ve yet to blog, but in the long-term I’m not exactly sure what I’m going to do.  I’ve been wanting a decent DSLR for a while, but unfortunately things are tight and it would be a very long time before I can save up enough for one!

I will keep you all posted, though.  And — if you’d like to help, feel free to use my affiliate link to Amazon next time you shop there – any money I make through the blog gets re-invested back into the blog, so it will go into the camera fund!  And I am open to any ideas you have as well :)

So, in the meantime, I’ll be shifting gears a little bit, maybe doing more informative stuff and not so much recipes.

The final stage of making our homemade Healthy-ish S’mores is the graham cracker.

That was a pretty tough part, and truth be told I haven’t quite perfected it just yet, but I’ll give you a direction to go in.

Trying to make grain-free and starch-free graham crackers is pretty rough. You really do need to have a starch of some sort to have good results in baking, but I was pleasantly surprised with these. Continue reading “Homemade Graham Crackers – Grain-free, gluten-free, GAPS-legal, etc.” »

Homemade Honey Marshmallows

So step 2 of our homemade Not-So-Bad-For-You s’mores are the marshmallows.

Probably the most fun and easiest part, I never realized how simple these guys are.

But the cool part is homemade marshmallows can be so much more than JUST MARSHMALLOWS.

Confused yet? Read on! Continue reading “Homemade Honey Marshmallows” »

Homemade Honey-sweetened dark chocolate bars.

Rich, delicious, and free of unhealthy additives.

Truth be told, I’m not really a huge fan of honey-sweetened EVERYTHING.

So, I was kind of concerned the chocolate would taste very honey-y.  But happily, it didn’t! Continue reading “Homemade Honey-Sweetened Dark Chocolate Bars – GAPS, Paleo, Primal, Etc.” »

Imagine that, eh?

The truth is, summer’s just not SUMMER without a gooey-sweet s’more in hand.

But… what to do if you are avoiding certain foods like wheat, refined sugar, corn syrup, and the like?  Make your own! Continue reading “Homemade S’Mores that are HEALTHY and even GAPS-legal” »

Homemade Starbucks Bottled Frappuccino Iced Coffee RecipeRecently, my husband’s employer installed a super cool kind of self-serve snack bar.

It’s kinda convenient, although the problem is my husband loves sweetened iced coffee drinks.

So, naturally, he started bringing home those bottled Starbucks drinks every day…

… and at $2.50 a pop it started to make a little noise in the wallet.

So one day we were talking about them…

In the discussion it was uncovered that he didn’t particularly adore THAT specific brand (he also likes Java Monster) but he just wants a sweetened creamy cold coffee drink.

And… what if I made some for him?  I’d just need to make up an iced coffee recipe, right? Continue reading “Homemade Iced Coffee Recipe (Or Starbucks Bottled Frappuccinos)” »

Upcoming Projects & Summer Update

Hello my lovelies!

It’s been a little while since I posted but I don’t have anything new to post at the moment so I thought I’d let you all know what I’m working on.

I have quite a few projects in-process but nothing that’s completed that I can post about just yet.  So here’s what I’ve got coming up!

Upcoming Projects

This is "Bob the Beef," and he is the steer I bought a quarter of. Notice he is eating GRASS like a proper ruminant animal, not grains, candy wrappers, and ground-up parts of other beeves like commercial beef cattle does. I'm sure he will taste excellent.

Just on Friday we took a trip up north and picked up a quarter of a grassfed beef and half of a pastured pork.

I am super excited because that means I can finally finalize my corned beef recipe, which I’ve been working on.

We got a new BBQ that I will be converting to a smoker (I’ll blog it) and I’ll be smokin!

Actually I mean I’ll be smoking some home-made bacon and hopefully later this summer I can work on doing some sausages.

I’m also going to try making homemade smoked sea salt. Continue reading “Upcoming Projects & Summer Update” »
